Luckily, I was able to avail myself of family and friends for my wedding services. Here my friend Beth Armstrong, who is a professional makeup artist, works on my face, while my mom -- who used to be a hair stylist to celebrities in L.A. -- wrangles my curls into place.

My father died when I was 12, so my brother walked me down the aisle. Here we are stepping out to Edith Piaf's "La Vie en Rose," which I chose to honor my French heritage. A family friend did all our flowers. My bouquet was a mix of red roses and Lily of the Valley.

Our wedding colors were apple, ivory and gold. My sister, who was the maid of honor, wore a gold shawl to signify her special place in the bridal party. The bridesmaids chose their own hairstyles and gold shoes, and I provided a choice of jewelry. On the left is our "flower woman." A friend, who is the same age as us, really wanted to be the flower girl. So her wish was granted! During the ceremony, my sister-in-law read an excerpt from "Oh! The Places You'll Go!" by Dr. Seuss, which I edited and arranged for our reading.

We wanted our wedding to be full of personal touches, so my husband made our cake topper. A sign next to the cake explained each piece of the topper: the Legos signified being young at heart, the people represented us, the two computers in the background symbolized how we met (Match.com) and there were two little black cats, which stood in for our real ones at home. Since it was so close to Halloween, we gave our guests mardi gras masks as favors. It all seemed to fit really well together. Katrina Rozelle in Alamo, CA, baked our wonderful cake.

I belong to a small vocal jazz group, and as a surprise to my groom, we performed "The Shadow of Your Smile." Afterwards, Ryan and I had our first dance, to "Miracle" by the Foo Fighters. I wanted a good balance of traditional and modern, because that's kind of what we're like!

One of my favorite photos...the photographer (I work at a newspaper and hired a co-worker to shoot the wedding) told Ryan to tell me a secret. Neither of us remembers what he said, but apparently it was really funny! Rios-Lovell Winery in Livermore, CA, was the perfect backdrop for our photos.
